This workshop is aimed at helping the nervous beginner (and wobbly intermediate) student of calligraphy come to grips with this oft thought-of difficult aspect of our craft in a simple, logical and pain-free manner.
We shall begin by looking and working on some of the problems encountered in traditional and basic commercial work that often leans towards ‘the safe’, comfortable and logical before moving on to the more adventurous and perhaps more exciting contemporary layouts.
Throughout the workshop will be many exercises, short talks, demonstrations and visual aids that will explain and clarify the many vital ingredients required to produce satisfying and suitable layouts.
We shall also look, and work at, the 7 basic elements of Contrasts as well as techniques to explain and clarify page arrangement in a gently non-threatening manner and so eliminate the word ‘Terrified’ from our L and D thinking.
A feature of the workshop will be for each student to produce a small and helpful ‘Sampler’ book that will be a record of all of the above and a reminder of our time together.
