March
Meeting The March meeting of the Nashville
Calligraphers Guild will be held on
Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Plaza Artist Materials in Nashville. Following the business meeting, Lilo Regen
will conclude our study of Italic lettering. Our repertoire of letterforms is based on
relatively few stroke elements that are combined in letter construction. The broad-edged pen produces
hairlines and thick strokes, in other words, a ribbon effect that becomes a
major design feature in Italic.
Pen angle and direction of stroke determine the width o the strokes
which have to be brought into balance in order to produce harmonious
effect. To achieve this effect
pen angle adjustments have to be made.
In general calligraphic hands have a predominant pen angle – not a
constant one. All of these aspects of letter design along
with letter and word spacing will be the focus of our study for the March
program. For hands-on experience, please bring a
chisel-edged marker or a parallel pen 3 mm or wider and graph paper. If you have done any Italic
calligraphic work since our last meeting, bring it for show and tell. Guild meetings are open to anyone interested in the art of calligraphy.
