Classes & Workshops The Glory of Flourishes
October 4 and 5, 2008 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Plaza Arts in Nashville
The magnificence of nature, the glory of
Olympic athletes, the loftiest of human thoughts – these are wonderfully
expressed in the flourishes that developed during the Renaissance. This workshop will include a demonstration of
flourishes with both Italic lower case and capitals. A series of
exercises will include finger writing and “waterfall” while working to
music. We will break down complex flourishes into their most basic
components and progress from simple swashes to more complicated forms. Students will learn the best places to use
flourishes and how to weave them into multiple lines. Interpretive uses
of flourishes will also be explored as a way to create new ones. Students must have had prior experience in
Italic calligraphy.
Materials list will be provided once students are registered. Cost is estimated to be $100 for
members. The workshop is currently full. Anyone not currently registered may be placed on the
waiting list by submitting the workshop registration form and deposit check. First Annual NCG Scribehaven Retreat
